The test bed leverages the concept, model, and technology of edge computing to integrate with urban water supply devices, information systems, and service processes, providing safe and high-quality drinking water for residents in a reliable and efficient manner. The test bed also monitors water quality of the entire system to analyze the data collected in physical and analysis models, and identifies changes of water quality, enhancing the water security. In addition, the test bed takes advantage of the O&M capabilities of advanced water supply devices to achieve fault monitoring and detection, as well as automatic diagnosis. The test bed also leverages predictive maintenance technology to improve the reliability of water supply devices. The test bed improves power supply efficiency by reducing device consumption, detecting leakage and loss, and optimizing the efficiency of system synchronization. Based on Big Data analytics, the test bed establishes duplicable process methods and solutions to improve the system security and operation efficiency through the modernized model.
The edge computing platform of smart water provides the test bed with advanced sensing, network, computing, control, and intelligence technologies to comprehensively detect devices such as secondary water supply devices. In this way, a huge volume of data from multiple systems is exchanged and controlled in the E2E process. This facilitates self-diagnosis and predictive maintenance, reduces power consumption, and ensures water security. The following figure shows the overall architecture.
Water quality monitoring
The reason that water quality cannot be monitored in the water pipeline network is not related to technology. Instead, it is related to the high cost of providing sensors for the entire water pipeline network. This test platform is used to analyze the feasibility of reducing the cost of sensor deployment. Based on the industrial Internet, the water supply system can be provided as a service to water affairs management departments of a city or country. In this way, the security, reliability, and efficiency of water can be improved, and water can be provided for more people at a low cost. The cost of devices with five indicators for monitoring water quality decreases by 20%.
This test bed uses water quality monitoring of the entire system, and physical and analysis models to locate the degraded water source and improve the overall water security at a low cost. The water quality analysis covers the main urban area and the cycling rate of the water tank is 80%. The water supply of the water tank can be remotely controlled with an accuracy of 100%.
Water supply reliability
This test bed integrates urban water supply assets, information systems, and the service process to provide secure and high-quality water to residents in a reliable and efficient manner. The required investment in water quality monitoring devices is reduced by more than 60%.
This test bed reduces water supply consumption, and detects leakage and loss to improve water transmission efficiency and asset operation efficiency. The water supply consumption is less than 900 kWh per 1000 tons.
There are 800,000 secondary water supply devices in the installed base market, and there is space in the market for about 3,000,000 sets of direct drinking devices. The value of the ICT market that Huawei can participate in is US$1 billion. In recent years, with the steady development of the real estate market and the reconstruction of water supply systems in old communities, the market scale of secondary water supply devices in China has steadily increased. In 2016, sales of secondary water supply devices in China reached CNY15 billion, and there was demand for about 80,000 sets of secondary water supply devices nationwide. Currently, the O&M cost of secondary water supply in high-rise buildings is about 0.8 RMB/ton. In 2016, CNY35 billion was spent on O&M of secondary water supply devices in China.
