Overview and Objectives

With the accelerated development of next-generation information and communications technologies (ICT) such as mobile Internet, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and Big Data, the integration of network connection, vehicles, and transportation is becoming a hot topic. In 2010, the Ministry of Communications promoted the construction of Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and set IoV as one of the major projects for the country. In 2011, the Twelfth Five-Year Plan for IoT was released, which explicitly proposed the strategy of first applying IoT to intelligent transportation and intelligent logistics. In 2015, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released the Notice on the Action Plan for Issuing and Implementing the State Council's Guidance on Actively Promoting "Internet+" (2015-2018). In the notice, the MIIT touched upon the future development plan of IoV for the first time and announced that the IoV Development Innovation Action Plan (2015-2020) would be released. To speed up the industrial deployment of IoV, the MIIT requires enterprises to promote the development of IoV technologies and standards, organize pilot IoV activities, and use IoV example cases with 5G technologies to promote the development.

To counteract terrorism, a growing number of countries outside China require that video surveillance and GPS measures be implemented on vehicles such as public transport vehicles, school buses, and long-distance buses. These countries require that the vehicle running status can be monitored to ensure the safety of passengers on board and materials in transit. For example, in the field of school buses, as a growing number of schools use school buses, a large number of school bus management problems have also emerged (for example, drivers violating regulations and rules, poor maintenance of school buses, and students being left on school buses), leading to a large number of accidents. Improving the safety of school buses has become the biggest concern of governments, schools, and parents. In the field of logistics, aggressive driving causes serious damage to vehicles and reduces vehicle life. During cold chain transport, the environment inside the vehicles cannot be monitored in real time, leading to high transport maintenance and repair costs and high operating risks, which have become problems for transportation companies.

Huawei and Richfit leverage edge computing to develop the intelligent vehicle management solution, which helps vehicle users to monitor vehicle positions effectively and to receive instant updates on the vehicles' dynamic conditions. The solution also prompts drivers of dangerous driving to ensure the safe arrival of passengers and goods on board.

Application Scenario

The intelligent vehicle management solution uses advanced sensing, network, computing, and intelligent technologies to sense the overall running status of vehicles. Compared with traditional vehicle-mounted gateway solutions, the intelligent vehicle management solution uses the edge computing capability of the vehicle-mounted gateway to locally provide quick computing responses in the following aspects:

1、The intelligent solution uses vehicle-mounted edge computing to regulate driving and ensure vehicle safety. In the shuttle bus and public transport scenarios, the intelligent solution leverages GPS technology to obtain positions of running vehicles in real time. The calculation program on vehicle-mounted host computers can compare the real-time position with the predefined driving routes or regions in real time. If a vehicle deviates from the predefined route, the intelligent solution can generate alarms in real time and display prompts on the vehicle's screen. In addition, the vehicle-mounted host program can monitor illegal driving behavior, including speeding, rapid acceleration, sharp turns, sudden braking, and drowsy driving, and trigger alarms accordingly.

2、The vehicle-mounted application can identify passengers in real time to prevent them from taking wrong buses or being left in the vehicles. In the school bus scenario, the application can display student information and automatically determine whether the students take wrong buses. Students need to swipe their cards when they go on and off the school buses, and the program can use this information to determine whether some students are left on a bus.

3、The vehicle-mounted program can instantly process the data generated as vehicles are moving to assist customers in safe operation. During cold chain transport, information obtained by the humidity and temperature sensors can be accessed by the vehicle-mounted host, which has strong access capabilities, and be processed locally and in real time. Once the environment inside a vehicle changes and does not meet the requirements for the transportation of goods, the host application automatically generates alarms and informs the driver and the monitoring center.

4、Location based services can increase business operating income. The intelligent solution can provide the location-based multimedia advertisement function. The solution obtains the location of vehicles in real time and uses this information to play advertisements of surrounding shopping malls. These video advertisements can increase the revenue of customers.

Expected Outcome

Edge computing, implemented through the local computing capability of Huawei-developed vehicle-mounted gateways, brings the following differentiated benefits to customers:

1、Uses detection data to regulate driving in real time and ensure vehicle safety.

2、Identifies passengers in real time to prevent passengers from taking wrong buses or being left in the vehicles.

3、Locally processes the data generated as vehicles are moving in real time to ensure the safety of goods in transport.

4、Reduces operating expense (OPEX) and increases enterprises' revenue.

5、Encrypts communication data to ensure data security and reliability.

Social Benefits

At the World Expo theme forum, Wu Hequan, deputy director of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and deputy director of the Advisory Committee for State Informatization (ACSI), stated that IoV, which is derived from IoT, will become an important symbol of smart cities in the future. What are smart cities? Wu Hequan's definition is that a smarty city uses intelligent technologies to allow key infrastructure in the city to form services, making the city services more effective and providing an environment for harmonious coexistence between people and between people and society. Wu Hequan added that a smart city is a network-based city, involving the Internet, IoT, and IoV. Just as the Internet enables point-to-point communication between people, the IoV enables communication between vehicles. Experts point out that future vehicles with "IoV DNA" will be energy-efficient, environment-friendly, and intelligent. More importantly, they will provide unprecedented traffic security assurance and even eliminate the possibility of traffic accidents.
